Custom stonework requires years of experience dressing stones to make them fit together perfectly, and an artistic eye is as important as technical skill. If your masonry structure dates to the mid 1800s (or earlier) to the early 1900s, be cautious of any mason who does not understand the difference between the “soft” mortar used at the time the wall was built and “hard” mortar, which didn’t become prevalent until about 1930.
The use of “hard” mortar, made with Portland cement, can result in serious damage to historic bricks due to its impermeability. Instead of moisture seeping through the mortar, it is forced to escape through the bricks. This causes the face of the brick to deteriorate, which exposes the inner part of the brick to the ravages of weather—which ultimately causes rapid erosion of the brick.
